Review: Coperto Restobar

Review: Coperto Restobar

I’d eaten at Coperto Restobar twice before the visit I’ll review in this post. Both times were with friends, once for dinner and once for lunch and I really enjoyed the food on both occasions.

In this review, I’ll take you through my recent experience of Coperto’s Courtesy Car package.

Having seen loads of social media posts about this service since it launched in October 2019, I was keen to try it out and my boyfriend didn’t take much convincing to join me. He loves cars and food so it was an easy sell!

What is Coperto’s Courtesy Car package?

For a fixed price, the chauffeur-driven, BMW Series 7 courtesy car will collect and take you to Coperto Restobar (from a maximum distance of 25km). Once at the restaurant, you can have a 4- or 5-course dinner which includes wine pairings. And after dinner, the car will be waiting to take you home.

Our experience

The car

We booked for a Friday and were picked up from our home exactly on time by the friendly, polite driver. I won’t pretend to know much about cars but the courtesy car is beautiful. Smart, luxurious and a really smooth, comfortable drive.

As an Englishwoman, it’s not easy for me to get my head around getting dressed up and then cycling to a restaurant for a nice dinner. I’m used to getting a taxi to go out (I come from a big city in the UK where Uber is really inexpensive) so I really appreciated the fancy car even though we don’t live too far away from the restaurant.

Food & Drinks

Pane e Coperto: freshly baked bread rolls with butter and other accompaniments. Ours included olives, beetroot, cream cheese in wafer horns and salami.

Celeriac ravioli: stuffed with ricotta and served with leeks, pecan croutons and curry mayonnaise. The nutty flavour of the celeriac ravioli was brought to life with the crunchy pecan croutons and spiced mayo. The leeks and light ricotta filling brought freshness and made it a really lovely starter.

Paired with: Les Cigognes Pinot Blanc 2018 Hubert Beck – a pleasant, fruity white wine that was light enough to go well with the delicate ravioli.

Trout: with sweet potato mash, carrot, enoki and saffron mayonnaise. I felt that the flavours and textures of this dish blended into one. Everything was soft and whilst I liked the overall flavour, nothing particular stood out. It was pretty to look at and I didn’t dislike it but I also wouldn’t order this over something else on another visit to Coperto.

Paired with: Just F**king Good Wine 2017 Neleman – an organic white wine which has a slightly spiced flavour due to its combination of grapes, making it a nice match for the fish.

coperto restobar kalfsstoof

Stewed veal: with sauerkraut, red onion compote, veal jus and Zwolle mustard. This whole dish was excellent. The veal was tender and so well balanced with the sauerkraut, onions and gravy. I could have easily eaten a giant portion of this. It’s just such a perfect dish for a cold, windy winter’s evening.

Paired with: a merlot – I didn’t hear the name of the wine we were served and forgot to ask as I was enjoying the veal so much! A lovely match with the meat though.

coperto restobar cheesecake

Cheesecake: coated in bastogne biscuit and served with pineapple, cinnamon ice cream and quinoa. This is exactly my kind of dessert – not too sweet and with some savoury elements. The biscuit-coated cheesecake is a nice variation on a traditional cheesecake with a biscuit or pastry base. It was a light, tasty dessert to finish the meal with.

Paired with: Saint-Croix-du-Mont 2015 Chateau du Haut Mayne – a dessert wine which balanced perfectly with the savoury flavours of cinnamon and quinoa in this delicious dessert.

Final Thoughts

I love that Coperto Restobar is in an ultra-modern conservatory attached to the beautiful old police station building which now houses Pillows Grand Hotel Ter Borch. The contemporary, airy feel of the restaurant matches well with the style of food.

I think the Courtesy Car package is great value for money. At €85,- for the 4-course dinner (€105,- for the 5-course option) plus wine pairings and, of course, the car service, I really would recommend it if you’re looking for a special night out with top-quality food and a really lovely overall experience.
